Tulpenrallye 1998

The story of 1998: Het succesvolle rally-concept van de afgelopen jaren wordt opnieuw gecontinueerd. Het Hotel des Vosges in Türckheim is na drie jaar niet meer in de route opgenomen, terwijl ook de Floréal Club in La Roche niet meer op het programma staat. Er wordt dit keer voor een meer westelijke route door Frankrijk gekozen, waardoor er nog meer in de Vogezen kan worden gereden. De deelnemerslijst bestaat grotendeels uit equipes die ook de afgelopen jaren succesvol zijn geweest. De belangstelling voor het evenement groeit snel en de organisatie kan niet meer dan 200 deelnemers toelaten, waardoor nieuwe deelnemers er nauwelijks tussen kunnen komen. De top van de deelnemerslijst wordt weer gevormd door Eddy van den Hoorn, Don van der Vaart, Linus Verhoeks, Karel Westerman, Renger Guliker, Bert Dolk en Paul van Doorne. Bart Rietbergen is na twee jaar weer terug en brengt de Volvo PV 544-1965 waar hij eerder dit jaar Peking-Parijs mee heeft gereden aan de start. Het buitenlandse contingent wordt aangevoerd door Michael Abram, Mike Cornwell en Franz Zapfe. Christian Heussi (Zwiterland) start dit jaar met een ex-fabrieks Renault Alpine. Tot de oudste auto’s behoren de zeer snelle Allard L uit 1947 van vader en zoon Pieter Vos, de in belangrijke mate uit popnagels en plamuur bestaande Triumph TR2 Sports uit 1954 van Peter Pratt en de Citroën TA7 van Ruud Wesselink uit 1937. De gebroeders Van Heiden van het Autotron starten met een bijzonder indrukwekkende ex-Stirling Moss Mercedes 300SL Gullwing uit 1955. Na de start op dinsdag rijden de equipes direct naar België, waar bij de Waterhoek in Grazen wordt geluncht. In het tweede gedeelte van die dag zit een fout in het routeboek waardoor geen van de equipes het beschreven gemiddelde kan halen, hetgeen door de organisatie vanzelfsprekend later wordt rechtgezet. De woensdag-route loopt naar Gérardmer, een plaats die in de historie van de rally vele malen is aangedaan. Op het centrale plein worden de deelnemers met wijn ontvangen. De route van de volgende dag in de Vogezen moet ingrijpend worden omgelegd, wanneer wedstrijdleider Kees Stoel een dag eerder in de ruim 40 cm sneeuw op de route komt vast te zitten. Bekende bergen als de Petite en Grand Ballon, Col de Brabant en Col de la Schlucht zijn nog steeds in de route opgenomen. Via een lunch in La Bresse arriveren de deelnemers donderdagavond in La Petite Pierre. De vrijdagroute loopt via Cattenom-Sentzich vlak bij de grens, via Luxemburg en België naar Vaals in Nederland. De laatste etappe loopt van Vaals, via Breukelen naar de finish in Noordwijk. Bij de finish waait het bijzonder hard en regent het, zodat er onder de luifel bij Huis ter Duin gefinisht wordt. Favorieten Van der Vaart, Verhoeks en Van den Hoorn komen in deze volgorde aan de finish op de tweede dag en zetten de rest van het veld op een behoorlijke afstand (allemaal al meer dan 1000 punten). De tweede dag verandert er weinig in het klassement; alleen Van der Vaart zakt een aantal plaatsen omdat hij ééen van de weinige top-equipes is met strafpunten deze dag. Een van de benzine-stations in Gérardmer blijkt een aantal deelnemers te hebben voorzien van benzine waarin ook water zit. Dit leidt tot de nodige reparaties bij een aantal equipes. Verhoeks is één van de slachtoffers en moet door deze problemen uitvallen. Van den Hoorn neemt dan de leiding over, gevolgd door Van der Vaart en Jetten. Op vrijdag en zaterdag komen Van den Hoorn en Smeets met de Volvo niet verder in de problemen, en aldus winnen zij na 1995 en 1997 opnieuw de International Historic Tulpenrallye. Don van der Vaart en André Jetten worden opnieuw tweede, gevolgd door Westerman – Roosenboom en Rietbergen – Roetgerink. Titia Westerhof en Anja van der Marel nemen revanche voor het door hen aangevochten verlies van vorig jaar in de Coupe des Dames en winnen deze bokaal opnieuw (voor de zesde maal). Zij krijgen hem uitgereikt door mevrouw Ciska Gatsonides, die de Coupe des Dames als eerste in 1949 won. De broers Menno en Ronald Vermaas winnen met Citroën DS 21 Cabriolet uit 1967 de toerklasse. Zanger Rob Janssen komt op het dak van de Volvo van Eddy van den Hoorn de zaal binnen in ‘Huis ter Duin’ tijdens de prijsuitreiking en geeft een wervelende show.
